The proportion of students achieving the top grades at A-level has fallen to its lowest level for more than a decade, this year's results show. This year some 25.5% got an A grade or higher - the lowest level since 2007 when it was 25.3%. Girls have narrowly reclaimed the lead from boys, with 25.5% achieving these grades compared with 25.4% of boys. Private tutors as scribes
An influential MP and major teaching union have called for an end to a "loophole" in exam regulations allowing pupils to use their private tutor as a scribe. The apparent lack of GCSE and A-level rules to prevent the tactic has prompted fears that privileged students could use their tutors to "game the system". Spotting mental health issues
Theresa May is to announce that all teachers in England and Wales will be trained to spot the early signs of mental health issues in children as part of a package of measures aimed at prioritising prevention. The training for all new teachers will be backed up by updated statutory guidance to make clear schools’ responsibilities to protect children’s mental wellbeing.
